As in the case of Bob Marley, the king of Afrobeat Fela Kuti has also had a strong influence on his children causing them to continue his musical adventure in one way or another. Femi was born in 1962 during the famous period of London residencey of his father, but after the separation of his parents he grew up in Nigeria with his mother Remi and did not meet his father until 1977, joining his band some time later. In the late eighties he started his own band called Positive Force, with whom he debuted in 1989 with "No Cause for Alarm", a song with obvious influences from his father's music. He has also inherited Fela's fierce and militant spirit, heavily criticising in many songs the corruption prevailing in his country. He has collaborated with stars of hiphop, soul and jazz such as Common, Mos Def, Jaguar Wright, Roy Hargrove, D'Angelo and Macy Gray. His latest CD "No place for my dream" was released in 2013.
